Health Equity/Research Interest
I am an endocrine surgeon who is interested in functioning and non-functioning tumors of the endocrine glands – including the adrenal glands, thyroid and parathyroid. My specific interest in the Center originated with a study that we recently completed that demonstrated that screening rates for primary hyperaldosteronism – a common cause of surgically remediable hypertension – are particularly low in a medically underserved minority community. My interest in the Center is to try to determine the prevalence of primary hyperaldosteronism in poor, minority communities and to focus efforts to improve screening for primary aldosteronism – and ultimately reduce the morbidity associated with poorly controlled hypertension in poor communities that suffer due to health disparities.
Expertise/Goals
My career has focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with endocrine tumors. I hope that I can combine my expertise in the diagnosis and management of primary hyperaldosteronism with the resources and expertise in the Center in carrying out studies on a community level in populations that suffer from health disparities.
