What I would like to offer as a collaborator…
My research focus is twofold. First, I am interested in historic narratives about race, and the way in which these narratives persist in the design and application of the medical literature. Second, I am interested in using narrative medicine and the humanities to design curricula that provide a platform for discussion and mitigation of implicit bias in medicine. In my experience, these critical topics are most effectively approached in a multidisciplinary way, using the lens of medicine, public health, sociology, and storytelling.
What I am looking for from a collaborator…
As a pediatric emergency physician with a public health degree and background in comparative literature, I understand the ways in which the healthcare system and social narratives intersect with the lives and care of individual patients. I lead narrative medicine sessions at the medical campus at every level from trainee to faculty, and have also led workshops nationally. My goal is to work collaboratively to disentangle outdated notions of race from the medical literature, as well as to design innovative curricula for physicians that provide a platform for discussion and mitigation of implicit bias.
