Health Equity/Research Interest
Dr. Behrends’ current research focuses on HIV HCV and opioid overdose prevention among people who use drugs. More broadly her work examines health services access and care for people who use drugs with the goal of generating relevant and timely health policy programmatic and economic research that addresses social justice and health equity concerns of people who use drugs. Ensuring culturally competent health services and reducing barriers to healthcare access for substance users is an important aspect to achieving health equity that is strongly related to Dr. Behrends’ research and the goals of the Cornell Center for Health Equity.
I have been working in the area of substance use research for 11 years with a focus on health services that sensitively meet the needs of people who use drugs using a combination of epidemiological methods economic analysis and mixed methods approaches. My expertise in this subject area will help ensure that substance use research is represented in this center to promote health equity research for this stigmatized population. By being a member I hope to enhance my collaborations across Cornell in substance use research and further my development through educational opportunities offered by the center.
