Health Equity/Research Interest

My research focuses on institutional change in the care economy, in particular as it relates to three mechanisms: the emergence of new roles; intensifying competition between providers; and the regulation of work and employment. A major theme that connects my focus on these three areas is my desire to critique these mechanisms from the perspective of inequality. I also endeavor to identify solutions to these inequalities, be it management practices that support better working conditions, union strategies that mitigate work pressures, or partnership working between unions and employers that provides mutual gains.

Expertise/Goals

My professional experience prior to my PhD encompasses frontline work as a paramedic which taught me much about professional hierarchies, the service ideal and difficulties of coordinating across organizations in healthcare. I also worked as a human resource management consultant and this experience taught me the value of human resource management practices for organizations as well as the inequities that occur in many areas of organizations, like unfair recruiting practices. I have brought these dual perspectives into my PhD and other academic research. I believe the Center would benefit much from my expertise in organizational dynamics, employment relations and broader institutional analysis in healthcare. I would like to gain access to scholars who share my aim of improving health services from the point of view of equity and equality; to gain mentorship from scholars to learn how to translate my research into practical information; and to participate in the Health Equity Seminar Series.
