Health Equity/Research Interest

My clinical expertise is in burn care, from the initial injury through the acute hospitalization and oft-needed surgeries to the scar rehabilitation and long term recovery for burn patients. Burn injury disproportionately affects working-class adults and children from lower socioeconomic areas in the United States. Globally, burn injuries are particularly devastating for patients in low and middle income countries as expert burn care is scarce in most of these countries.
I have a particular interest in scar rehabilitation for pediatric burns. Burn scars cause great suffering physically because of chronic pain and itching as well as scar contractures that can limit range of motion, socially because of the stigma in many communities about scarring, and emotionally from concerns about self image. Our team has been caring for burn patients in New York City for over 40 years and continues to seek the best possible techniques and practices to care for all aspects of our burn patients, both inpatient and outpatient.

Expertise/Goals

I previously worked with Physicians For Peace, a non-governmental organization, dedicated to improving quality of burn care in low and middle income countries through educational outreach missions and visited burn centers in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Colombia, Ghana, and Bolivia. I have over a decade of experience with clinical research on all aspects of burn care.

Like many in the Cornell community, I have heard the call to arms to change the structural inequalities that have been exposed during the COVID-19 crisis. I hope to serve as a mentor for any interested in burn care, especially for those who feel the calling to care for burn patients in economically challenged communities. I also look forward to working with others within the Center to achieve the mission of the Center.
