Health Equity/Research Interest

I have two main threads of research. First I work with local partners in the development of a community health worker program for Palestinian refugees which includes broadly understanding the structural determinants of health in the Arab world as well as investigating whether improving continuity of care can improve health outcomes for non-communicable diseases. Second I am interested in understanding culturally mediated modes of communication that affect patient care particularly when there is a cultural mismatch between care providers and patients.

Expertise/Goals

I have experience working with immigrants and refugees within and from the Middle East but particularly with Syrian and Palestinian refugees. I’m interested in collaborating on research focused on understanding and improving health for underserved populations in the US and abroad particularly focused on immigrants and refugees. I’m also interested in education in structural competency so health professional students grasp structural determinants of health and mechanisms at their disposal to affect change.
