Health Equity/Research Interest

My research and practice follow a model of embedding oneself in communities to build understanding and trust, working with communities to identify needs, involving community stakeholders in applied research, and assisting in the implementation and assessment of evidence-based practices. I am interested in facilitating more inclusive and equitable community engagement to develop holistic and systemic understandings of mechanisms that promote personal and environmental health. I am developing the Tompkins County ScienceHub, which began as a collaborative effort with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County (CCETC) to enhance community capacity to develop and make use of science resources to address community issues. My goal is to see ScienceHubs implemented across New York State. I have also been involved in research to develop message campaigns for consumer food safety practices, to test smoking cessation messaging, and to develop culturally responsive assessment tools for the field of citizen science. All have involved coordination with community organizations to reach underserved populations.

Expertise/Goals

I’d like to connect with others who are interested in building community capacity around evidence-based approaches to address local concerns related to personal and environmental health.
